Boardroom Coaching & Consultancy
Do board members and members of the executive team – these clever, dedicated, passionate, and accomplished people carefully selected to oversee an educational organisation and help it to navigate difficult challenges, typically fulfill their true potential and leverage the knowledge, experience, and skills around the boardroom table? Most often than not, they don't.
Research shows that 100% of board members know what is getting in the way of them being even more effective, yet barely 40% are discussing it. This maybe because the topic is too sensitive; there is simply not time on the planned agendas to include it; or simply because it's not made a priority and probably, it's hoped it will simply resolve itself. It rarely does. We give space and an ear to allow the necessary matters to be aired and through collaborative diagnosis and dialogue, we support the Board to move forward positively.
Fiona's work is dedicated to enabling those who sit on boards and work alongside the board, to become people who make a real impact through their board work, creating high-performing boards and successful organisations.
All Boards can benefit from an independent, external perspective inquiring into their ways of working. This can be particularly helpful where the Board is facing a new situation and wants help to think it through from different perspectives, and where the board wants to improve its overall performance.
We work with the whole board together, including executive members when appropriate. We might be asked to intervene in this way when the board is facing an emotionally charged situation- perhaps as a result of a difficult merger; when the Board has become stuck in a particular pattern of conversation; when relationships within the board have broken down or where factions have developed within the Board; but most commonly, we are called to support where a board is delivering good governance and is looking to become more effective and impactful, for the benefit of its stakeholders.
Board Member & Executive Coaching
We provide support and expertise for individual board members (executive and non-executive) to support them in their board role, build their confidence as a board member, and help them adjust their behaviours and conversational style to make their best possible contribution to the board and its committees. We have been asked to support board and executive members when taking on the chairing of a committee for the first time; as a new chair in leading the Board; where as an executive they are stepping into the boardroom to report to the Board for the first time; and where ongoing conflict exists between board members or a board member and an executive member, as a consequence of different behavioural styles or miscommunications.
Executive members are often the interface with the board. Navigating how to get the most from your Board to achieve effective decision-making is critical. The need for some support in the field of governance, are many and varied. Some of the work we have undertaken includes:
- Implementing new governance structures as part of a merger
- Undertaking a review of the clerking function as the role of the governance professional continues to develop, to ensure it is fit for purpose
- Setting up governance structures from scratch for Independent Training Providers
- Implementing new procedures and processes and the provision of support, following an external review of governance or an unsatisfactory Ofsted grade

National Leaders of Governance (NLGs) are experienced college governors and clerks with a strong record of supporting college improvement. They provide strategic mentoring and support to governance boards at other colleges that need to improve.
NLGs are able to determine the best way to support the particular needs of the college(s) they are working with.
The NLG programme operates alongside the National Leaders of Further Education programme as part of a collective package of support for colleges.
