External Board Reviews
Governance4FE's ethos is to help you help yourself and your organisation. We do this because change happens best, is more sustained, and has greater rewards when it takes place from within the organisation. We do this by providing and signposting to trusted information and guidance, sophisticated software tools, inspirational training, and a library of support documents.
We know from experience that every provider has its own challenges and requirements. With this in mind, we recommend institutions use a bespoke service to support them in any aspect of their governance review, by providing a mirror to each organisation's board performance in a manner that is honest, productive and future-focussed. Research and experience have told us that it is the 'behavioural governance' - ethical conduct, personal integrity, respect of diversity, values, culture, and relationships as they influence decision-making, that are as likely if not more likely, to influence how effective governance is. It is important therefore, that board reviews contain an evaluation of both procedural and behavioural governance.
Board evaluators should engage with governing bodies and the executive leadership in a supportive way to really challenge those responsible for governance to develop and implement impactful performance enhancement plans, based on trust, confidence and synergy within the boardroom. The Chartered Governance Institute has introduced a Code of Practice for board reviewers.
The Department for Education has published draft guidance on external reviews of governance and the final document is due for release in April 2022.
